In addition to the numerous exotic species implanted at the end of the 18th century in the residence of the queen Maria Carolina of Hapsburg-Lorena, the cultivation of the Camellia japonica started here surely in 1786 and it is thought the most ancient Italian cultivation of this kind.
Nowadays, the camelias are still part of the Royal palace’s botanical collection and animate the garden of the so called “Castelluccia”, the tower with an octagonal base in the Park’s Old Wood.
