The territory of Mount Amiata is the green lung of southern Tuscany. Surrounded by the massifs of Mount Labbro and Civitella – covered with chestnut and beech woods – it provides crystal clear water to Siena, Grosseto, Val d’Orcia, and Maremma. The mountain can be found half in the province of Grosseto and half in that of Siena – those two cities have thus created a system of nature reserves with peculiar features. On Mount Amiata there is a high concentration of biotopes and protected areas, in which the ecological balance allows extraordinary vegetational associations, also particularly suitable for the local fauna. Many of the Natural Reserves of the interprovincial system are located in those municipalities and almost the entire volcano is under a special protection program. Natural Reserve of the Holy Trinity
It is located 2.48 miles from Santa Fiora, along the provincial road that leads to Castell’Azzara – near the convent of the same name. It features a native forest of white firs.

It extends on the Mount Lambro and on the surrounding peaks.

Monte Amiata Wildlife Park
It is located within the reserve. It’s open every day, except on Mondays, from 7.15 AM to sunset. Suggested paths are available for visitors.

Located in the municipalities of Castiglione D’Orcia, Montalcino, Pienza, Radicofani, and San Quirico d’Orcia.

Pescinello Nature Reserve
It is located in the upper part of Albegna. The reintroduction of the Egyptian vulture is currently in progress. This reserve can be reached from Roccalbegna, traveling to Triana, turn left after about 1.24v miles.

Pigelleto Nature Reserve
It is located between Piancastagnaio and Castell’Azzara. The name comes from “Pigella”, a local term used in the past for “fir”.

Fortified City Park of Radicofani
It is part of the same town and is located in the stronghold area. It is open in winter, on Saturday and Sunday, and every day from April (from 10AM to sunset).

Rocconi Nature Reserve
It can be reached from Roccalbegna. It is located on the rugged Albegna gorges. It is partly a WWF Oasis, near the Raptors Recovery Center. It is open all year round and guided tours are available by reservation only.

Poggio all’Olmo Reserve
It can be reached from Monticello Amiata, a hamlet-district of Cinigiano. After leaving town, take the municipal road to Alteta. The reserve is accessible to all kinds of visitors.

Monte Penna Reserve
It is located in the municipality of Castell’Azzara, on the Civitella Massif and can be reached both from Castell’Azzara or from the hamlet of Selvena. It features karstic sinkholes, remarkable vegetation, and numerous caves of different sizes and depths where rare species of bats are abundant.

Amiata mining park
It is still being designed. It should recover several mining areas, including the huge one in Abbadia San Salvatore.
