Populus alba L.

The tree is 15 m tall and the circumference is of about 4 metres.
It belongs to the Salicaceae family and it is a native species of Southern-Central Europe and Oriental Asia. In Emilia Romagna it is mainly present along the rivers’ shores.
It prefers wet soils, but not regular flooding; it is quite resistant to salt.
Its wood can be used to produce cellulose for paper industries, to produce matches, for packagings and particle boards.
The dried cortex contains tannin and salicin, it posses a febrifuge function.
Poplars are fundamental  to consolidate river banks, thanks to the wide spreading of their roots  for more than 20 meters.
