Populus nigra L.
The tree is 31 meters tall and its circumference is 6.10 meters. It belongs to the family of the Salicaceae and it hails from the central-southern area of Europe and the eastern area of Asia. It prefers wet, fresh and deep soils and it tolerates well water stagnation. It can live in sandy and rocky soils, but it needs to reach water with the roots. It is present often along rivers and lakes, also in soils which are flooded. The species is vulnerable to fungus infections if there is a low presence of water. It is present in all Italy and it is possible to find it both in the wild and cultivated state in Basilicata. Black poplars are often planted along borders, entry alleys or used as road trees. The buds and the dry cortex are rich in essential oils which are used in the pharmaceutical industry. Its wood is used to produce paper, matches and semi-finishes products like plywood or veneered.
