This garden is located on the top of Bourbon Belvedere Hill, on the Island of Ponza. It was built in the 1980s, to promote the natural heritage of the surrounding archipelago.
FLORA
We’re in an oasis of Mediterranean and exotic species. Including ferns and orchids, as well as many arboreal and herbaceous specimens protected from extinction. At the foot of Belvedere Hill, by the sea, there is also a peculiar, and lush aquatic garden.
Local vegetation includes mastic (Pistacia lentiscus), holm oak (Quercus ilex), sweet broom (Spartium junceum), phyllirea (Phyllirea latifolia), strawberry tree bushes (Arbutus unedo) and juniper (Juniperus spp.).
The most typical plant is the dwarf palm (Chamaerops humilis), which gives the name to the nearby Island of Palmarola.
FAUNA
Many sedentary and migratory birds thrive in this garden, while monk seals and wild rabbits are just as abundant.
