“Parco della Rimembranza” (“Remembrance Park”) is a public garden located on the hill of Turin (built in memory of Turin fallen soldiers of the First World War), commonly known as “Parco della Maddalena” since it is located near the summit of “Bric della Maddalena” at 2.345 ft above sea level (the highest area of the city).
The park covers almost 222 acres and includes a large panoramic square on the top of the hill. In the centre of this very square, there’s is “Faro della Vittoria”, the Turin’s Arboretum, the Park of the Partisan Republics of Piedmont, and a series of streets and pedestrian paths which runs for about 28 miles.

In the park, there are over 21.000 trees, belonging to about 400 species – 5.000 housed in the Arboretum as the result of experimental plants. Such experiments actually began in 1924 in order to honour the 5.000 fallen soldiers from Turin who died during the First World War, but also in order to observe the behaviour of exotic species on the local hills (a project conceived by Professor Aldo Pavari).
The Park of the Partisan Republics of Piedmont was built in the 1970s, to preserve and rebuild the natural woods of the regional hills.

The Arboretum

The Arboretum is an important resource for studies and plant monitoring.
In fact, it was designed like that of Vallombrosa, in Tuscany, with the specific purpose of verifying the rooting, the growth speed, the resistance to diseases and all the specific features of the species planted in this area. The result of such thorough observation would benefit any further reforestation project, as well as the very production of timber.
The tree species, coming from all over the world, have thus been arranged according to scientific and ornamental criteria.
