“Ciciu” are dolmen-like natural structures which resemble a mushroom: they’re the result of erosion and tectonic activities over the centuries.
Located at the foot of the hills in the province of Cuneo, between Dronero and Busca, and at the foot of Mount San Bernardo (between 650 and 950 meters above sea level), they are part of a larger natural area, specifically created to preserve them.
In total, there are 479 “erosion columns”, with different heights ranging from half a meter to 10 meters.
Their origins date back to the Ice Age, when a tributary of the Maira watercourse brought a large amount of debris downstream, due to the melting of the glaciers. Later on, atmospheric agents and tectonic movements have constantly reshaped the slopes until today. According to an ancient legend, however, the “ciciu” are the 100 petrified Roman legionaries who were chasing Saint Costanzo.

Among the “ciciu” there are recreation areas for the visitors, a sports path, a tourist path and a gymnastic path, all packed with eye-catching glimpses of Cuneo plain.

This reserve also includes numerous plant and animal species.
The flora mainly features downy oaks (Quercus pubescens) and chestnut trees (Castanea sativa), as well as other 300 plant species that are fundamental for the stability of the slope and its protection from erosion.
Animal species include nuthatches, lesser spotted woodpeckers, green woodpeckers, crested tits, Eurasian blue tits, long-tailed tits, common firecrests, goldcrests, buzzards, peregrine falcons, owls, tawny owls, and barn owls.
