This park is in Marina di Massa, in the Municipality of Massa. Its protection, entrusted to the WWF, is aimed at the safeguard of the original environment which contains typical features of the coastal forest.
Several restorations over this 3.7-acre area began in 1993, thanks to the local WWF section and the security guards of the WWF nucleus of Massa Carrara. Since then, structures and projects have constantly developed to raise environmental awareness among the visitors, as well as to save and protect many animal species.
Since 1996, educational areas, nature trails, wetlands, aquariums, a visitor centre, an ecological island, several aviaries and a botanical garden have also been created.
The flora features a wooded area of Alnus glutinosa (alder), and an area with Mediterranean vegetation including Juniperus oxycedrus (prickly juniper), Quercus ilex (holm oak), Pinus pinaster (maritime pine), Populus alba (white poplar), Pistacia lentiscus (mastic), Olea europaea sylvestris (olive tree), Arbutus unedo (strawberry tree), Spartium junceum (Spanish broom), Rhamnus alaternus (alaterno), and many species typical of lake environments and wetlands.
The fauna includes buzzards, kestrels, owls, owls, barn owls, herons, peacocks and turtles; for the latter, a sea turtle recovery centre has been established, where those cute creatures are sheltered and taken very good care of, before returning to their natural habitat.
Bird species are similarly by protected by “L’Assiolo Wild Animal Recovery Center” active within the park.
