In the historic centre of Aosta (known as “Augusta Praetoria” in Roman times), there are the Public Gardens of Rue Conseil Des Commis; they’re near the central Piazza Chanoux and the train station. Built by the municipal administration at the end of the XIX century, they have undergone some minor changes, while the original layout is still visible today.

The gardens are made of several large lawn areas – 4,783 square yards in total – with many trees and a large central flowerbed. In particular, there are seventy trees of different species, including fifty horse chestnuts (Aesculus hippocastanus), nine cedars (Cedrus spp.) – seven were planted at the beginning of the XIX century- two maples (Acer spp.), a plane tree (Platanus spp.), a highly developed specimen of white poplar (Populus alba) – exceeding 82 ft in height and a 3.6-ft wide trunk – and finally a peculiar fern-leaved beech (Fagus sylvatica “Asplenifolia”).

All the plants in these gardens have recently been subjected to phytopathological investigations in order to monitor their health and guarantee a pleasant experience for the visitors during all the seasons.

In the central flowerbed, there are roses belonging to the Floribunda group, with white and red corollas, as well as several specimens of hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis).
