“Ruggine del Piemonte” Apple

The “Ruggine del Piemonte” apple (Malus domestica) is an ancient variety of the “Renetta” (“Reinette” or “Rennet”) cultivars.
The plant is quite rustic and resistant to parasites and diseases. The medium-sized fruits are rounded and slightly flattened, with a thin, rough, medium russet skin, green in colour, but tinged with coppery red when exposed to the sun.
The pulp tastes like yesteryear apples: it is firm and crunchy, creamy-white, not particularly juicy but very sugary, acidulous, aromatic, with an aftertaste like amaretto.
The fruits, ideal for cakes, ripen from October-November and can be stored for a long time outside the refrigerator.
