San Liberato Botanical Park

Overlooking Lake Bracciano, this park stretches over about 12 acres around the ancient Roman church plunged in a chestnut forest (Castanea sativa).
The current estate is the result of creative and hard-working Count Donato Sanminiatelli – art historian and gardener – his wife Maria Odescalchi, and landscape architect Russell Page.
The several hundred years old church, guarded by a fig tree (Ficus spp.), and a cypress tree (Cipressus spp.), has a portico bordered by columns, with the bell tower “of the Thousand” (“Dei Mille”) on its southeast corner. The inner structure has a single nave with an apse, a raised presbytery, a crypt, and a small chapel to the right of the altar. Adjacent to the building, there are what used to be monks’ cells.

San Liberato is a botanical park that hosts many plant species from all over the world, such as sugar maple (Acer saccharum), Japanese cherry trees (Prunus serrulata), American storax (Liquidambar styraciflua), Persian ironwood (Parrotia persica), camphor trees (Cinnamomum camphora), tulip trees (Liriodendron tulipifera), and black tupelo (Nyssa spp.) which boast bright colors in autumn.

Camellias (Camelia spp.), Rhododendrons (Rhododendron spp.), Mexican orange trees (Choysia ternata) and evergreen bamboo (Phyllostachys nigra) are also present.

In San Liberato it is also possible to walk among endless shades of roses and enjoy the beautiful sight of a stone fountain with water lilies (Nymphaea spp.), and frogs.
