San Vito Cork Oak Wood – The Oak of San Vito
This post is also available in: Italiano (Italian)
This is the most important and largest cork oak wood in peninsular Italy: it extends for about 740 acres, at the foot of Monte Calvo, in the municipality of Monte San Biagio (Latina). It is actually a forest of tall trees (Quercus suber), many of which centuries-old and quite monumental.
It is still used today for bark extraction. Creeping towards the mountain, cork oaks are gradually replaced by the holm oak forest (Quercus ilex) and, in the sunniest patches, by the Mediterranean scrub.
Many animal dwell in the cork forest, including toads and reptiles, many birds, mammals, micro-mammals and bats.
There are a lot of nature trails suitable for any type of visitor. One path takes you to a particular tree, a cork and olm oak crossbreed, considered as one of Italy’s natural monuments, and the very symbol of San Vito cork oaks.
The whole estate belongs to – and is managed by – the Regional Natural Park of Ausono, and Lago di Fondi, located in via Cavour 46, in Fondi, Latina, tel. +39 0771 513644.
