Scacciadiavoli Estate and Winery

This winery, established in 1884, was named after an exorcist who used wine for his rituals and lived in a village on the edge of the property, in Montefalco (province of Perugia). “Scacciadiavoli”, in fact, literally means “he who drives devils away”.
The estate was actually created by Prince Ugo Boncompagni Ludovisi from Piombino: conceived as a true winemaking facility and an advanced oenological complex at the end of the XIX century.
Since 1954, the company has been owned by the Pambuffetti family: Amilcare, in fact, eventually bought it after having worked for this company since the age of 14.
Today, the company owns 321 acres, although only 86 are planted with vines. The vineyards grow on several hills in the municipalities of Montefalco, Gualdo Cattaneo, and Giano dell’Umbria.
The soils are clayey-loamy, with medium depth and very suitable for quality viticulture.
The cultivation is focused on late-ripening grape varieties such as Sagrantino, exclusively in the territory of Montefalco, Bevagna, Gualdo Cattaneo, Castel Ritaldi and Giano dell’Umbria – all in the province of Perugia.
Sagrantino variety, in fact, is a late-ripening type of grape with a unique phenolic heritage, but cannot withstand freezing temperatures in winter and spring: it, therefore, requires a continental but mild climate and abundant sunlight exposure.
After the harvest, the grapes are brought to the cellar, built in the second half of the XIX century, when Prince Boncompagni-Ludovisi left Rome to permanently settle here and devote himself to the production of wine.
The winery is actually leaning against the hill, with a vertical structure on four levels, one of which is underground, and is embedded in that very relief so as to make Tenuta Scacciadiavoli easily recognizable, even at some distance.
