Sentiero Campagnano-Piano Liguori

The ancient village of Piano Liguori is part of Ischia’s municipality, in the town section by the same name located 325 meters above the sea level. It is formed by few houses and it is reachable through a path with hairpin turns and climbs, which starts at the Church of Santa Maria Annunziata in Campagnano, a hilly section of the municipality of Ischia, where there is a small paved road which becomes then unpaved. The path is difficult, but the fatigue is rewarded by the beauty of the surrounding landscape: rustic, ruined houses, vine yards and vegetable gardens create still today a wonderful landscape perched over the sea, with some terracing on arduous locations. It is possible to rest along the path, since there are benches where it is possible to have a snack and make bird-watching, because falcons and kestrels are typical of these coasts. Few people (about thirty) live in the village and they lead a life still linked to ancient habits: they draw water from wells, warm up thanks to chimneys or braziers, cultivate the fertile land to produce grapefruits, fruit and vegetables in abundance (a particular type of beans called zampognari is produced here together with an excellent oil). Trani’s family restaurant is located at the end of the walk and it is part of the rests of Piano Liguori’s village. At this point, it is possible to walk back to Campagnano or carry on till Schiappone and Sgarrupata with the church of Saint Pancras, two locations not reachable easily and not recommended for the ones suffering from vertigos, since the path is overlooking the sea and it is really narrow at certain points.
