Between the towns of Arona and Castelletto Ticino, this reserve covers a 2.5-mile long area stretching on 389 acres. Together with that of Fondo Toce, it represents the only area with mainly spontaneous vegetation on the western shore of Lake Maggiore.
Its important function as a filter for the lake allows many species of fish to thrive in their ideal habitat. The local fauna is, in fact, truly variegated: for instance, there are several birds – over one hundred species have been observed so far. There are aquatic varieties (grebes, swans, coots), which come here to nest, and migratory species, including swallows.
The cycle and pedestrian paths that run through the reeds offer plenty of beautiful sights to the visitors of the reserve, in stark contrast to the growing urbanization of the adjacent area.
Inside the reserve, in addition to the renowned agricultural complex of Villa Tesio – home to thoroughbred horse training, there are some campsites and a free beach, called “Pirolino”, with a well-equipped play area for the children.
