Terme di Cavascura

Cavascura is a hydrologic basin at its natural state, dug in the living rock of a deep inlet, which has not been modified and still preserves its caves, little water falls and boiling springs, which keep coming down from the mountain. The term Cavascura derives from two Greek words “causos” and “coure” which indicate the water’s extreme heat. The spring of Cavascura was already a splendid place in the times of ancient Rome. Altars, chapels and little temples were built in its vicinities and witness the marked religiosity of this population. The spring is 300 meters away from the  Maronti’s beach and it is possible to get here by following a little hot water stream which opens itself in a small riverbed between the tuff walls of the hill. This place has always been known all around the world: sick patients from all over Europe arrived here to try Cavascura’s healing waters and muds. This marvellous archaeological park has been abandoned many times and has also changed management frequently, but it has been refurbished and opened to the public in 1988 by the Di Iorio brothers, who have made everything possible to keep it open without modifying or adding anything. The Spa Centre of Cavascura is an open-air thermal room with blooming broom trees, dense shrubs, chestnut trees (Castanea sativa) and oaks. A vine variety (Vitis vinifera) grows on the top of the crest and at the bottom of the valley, where the tuff wall ends and the thermal spring begins; there are also boiling showers, which come down from the mountain like waterfalls, and natural saunas whose temperature reaches 70-80°C.
