Terriccio Castle

This Castle is located in Terriccio, partly in the province of Pisa and partly in the province of Livorno, on the northern edge of the Tuscan Maremma, just below the town of Castellina Marittima.
The residential complex, consisting of the castle, the village and several farmhouses, has practically remained unchanged since the XIX century and is plunged in the Tuscan landscape featuring the typical cypresses (Cupressus sempervirens L.) on the hills. Part of the estate in the plains, while it also reaches the surrounding hills covered by forests of Turkey oaks and common oaks. Conversely, going down to the valley, towards the sea, there are several cultivations of cereals, olive trees and vines.
All the farming activities are very well integrated into the surrounding environment: the historic wine cellar, for example, features exposed brick vaults where just the modern steel tanks stand out.
At the end of the 1980s, a new phase of sensible viticulture began in the 62 acres of the company. The main aim was to fully enhance the potential of the territory by planting “Chardonnay” in 1988, “Sauvignon Blanc” a year later, then the vines with two red berried grapes of international varieties like Bordeaux, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot. The latter foreign varieties replaced the traditional “Sangiovese” and “Trebbiano”, turning the Terriccio vineyards into an absolute novelty in the area of Castellina.
Currently, there are 148 acres of vines where some other varieties have been planted and thoroughly researched, in order to study, evaluate and test both their qualities and organoleptic features through the process of micro-vinification.
The planting density varies from 5.500 to 7.000 vines per hectare, based on the final use of each vine.
The company pays particular attention to organic crops, especially cereals, such common wheat and spelt (Triticum spp.), historical crops, forage, and olive trees (Olea europaea L. )
