The Dalechamps oak in Macrì

The Macrì oak (Quercus delechampii) is in Supersano, province of Lecce.
Its tall and solitary foliage stands out among the surrounding cultivated fields. Right there, there used to be Bosco Belvedere, a large green expanse of holm oaks and chestnut trees, stretching from the sea to the hinterland and reaching as many as 16 municipalities.
The Macrì specimen is one of the last oaks in the Belvedere forest. Over the decades, much of this wood has been lost due to deforestation and the need for agricultural spaces. The Macrì oak, catalogued as one of the Monumental Trees of Puglia, has always grown there as a precious legacy of the extremely rich local flora.
