The flowery fields of Casteluccio di Norcia

Castelluccio Plateau can be found on the Sibillini Mountains, in the province of Perugia, at 4.747 ft above sea level. The area is bordered to the North-East by Mount Vettore, to the SouthEast by Mount Guaidone, to the North-West by Mount Veletta, and to the South-West by Mount Ventosola – all moderately low peaks that created a basin divided into three plateaus, million years ago; constant but slow geological movements are still taking place throughout that area.
Pian Grande, Pian Piccolo and Pian Perduto are currently used for pasture and agriculture.
The Sibillini Mountain Range, in the Umbria-Marche Apennines, are part of the Sibillini National Park and are very famous for their wonderful wild blooms from early spring to late summer.
Castelluccio Plateau makes no exception: from May to mid-July, the cultivated fields turn into a wonderful mosaic of colours, thanks to the flowering of agricultural cultivations and wildflowers spontaneously growing after the harvest. The blooming peak generally occurs on the third and last Sunday of June.
Along the paths across the fields, including those that lead to Mergani and Visso, there would be thousands of gentianella, narcissus, violets, poppies, buttercups, asphodels, rainforest plums, clovers, sorrels and many other wild flowers; in the very cultivated fields, where no pesticides are used, gloriously bloom of lentil (Lens culinaris), common sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia), forage, and mustard plants; ot to mention weed-like species like poppies (Papaver rhoeas), charlock mustard (Sinapis arvensis), cornflowers (Centaurea cyanus), corn chamomile (Anthemis arvensis), oxeye daisy (Leucathemum vulgare), and large Venus’ looking glass (Lousia speculum – veneris), blessing the landscape with eye-catching shades of red, yellow, ocher, white, light blue, pink, and purple. A wondrous sight to be enjoyed in pure awe.
Many thanks to Enrico Crosta for the wonderful photos!
