Torre Ratti Castle
This post is also available in: Italiano (Italian)
Torre Ratti Castle, in Borghetto di Borbera (province of Alessandria), dates back to the XI century. It was officially mentioned for the first time in 1413 when some expansion works were carried out on behalf of Filippo Maria Visconti, lord of Milan.
Originally, the main structure had a parallelepiped shape but, in the XVII century, a square tower was added and, later, another structure on the north side. The current appearance, therefore, features the typical elements of a late Renaissance and Baroque fortress.
The castle is connected to the adjacent village through the ancient Abbey of San Bernardo.
The fiefdom of the Ratti Opizzoni family from Tortona has recently been restored by the current owners.
The park
The complex is surrounded by a park, located along the shore of the Borbera Stream, and partly arranged as an Italian garden, with a Baroque fountain, lawn areas and expertly trimmed boxwood hedges.
