Torre Salsa Oriented Nature Reserve is a protected natural area, established in 2000 by the Sicilian Region and entrusted to WWF Italy. It covers an area of 1.882 acres, between Siculiana Marina and Eraclea Minoa, in the province of Agrigento – within a Site of Community Importance.

The reserve protects one of the few intact examples of dune environment that extends on a 3.7 mile-long coastline including cliffs, dunes and large beaches; further inland, there are several natural terraces carved by the local streams, small hills, forests of Aleppo pines (Pinus halepensis) and wetlands. IIn the background, there’s the rugged and mountainous landscape, with Stella, Cupolone and Eremita Mountains. The ancient “Torre Salsa” watchtower can be found inside the wetland.

One of its kind among all the Sicilian reserves, Torre Salsa hosts a WWF managed Oasis: some 20 acres purchased in the second half of the 1980s to protect this almost pristine strip of the Sicilian coast. The Oasis is currently mostly focused on the renowned “turtle project”.
