The Tramin winery is in Termeno (province of Bolzano), in the very heart of the Bassa Atesina area, on the southern side of the Alps. It was founded in 1898 by the priest Christian Schrott, and today it features 290 members working on some 618 acres among the municipalities of Termeno, Egna, Montagna, and Ora. The winery is one of those with the oldest tradition, and among the first cooperatives in this Region.
Tramin is the German name that identifies Termeno, home of the aromatic vine which produces the fragrant “Gewürtztraminer” wine: it’s actually the ancestor of some of the most ancient grape varieties such as Cabernet-Sauvignon and Pinot.
Tramin Winery also produces white, red, and sweet wines from Lagrein vines (native to Alto Adige), Pinot Bianco, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon.
The winery has always employed thorough environment-friendly cultivation techniques, producing 90% of its wines without using herbicides and always minimizing its impact on the surrounding natural environment.
In June 2012, the winery installed a new solar panel array which covers 85% of its total need, while and the remaining power is obtained from 100% natural resources.
The winery was largely built with recyclable and energy-saving materials, thus spearheading a major change focused on ecological building strategies.
Opened in 2010, it was actually designed by Werner Tscholl and it includes an impressive sculpture evoking Tramin vines, their shape, and their mesmerizing color. The past and the are perfectly blended together, in a winemaking facility made with wood, iron, glass, and concrete – it thus appears in perfect harmony with the surrounding environment.
