At the altitude of about 5.249 ft, in Bulla (between the Municipality of Ortisei in Val Gardena and Alpe di Siusi), there’s the highest rose garden in Europe: Rosarium Uhrerhof owned by the Zemmer family.
It houses about 5000 roses, belonging to 150 different varieties, arranged on a 4.790-square yard slope; this area, which is found next to the Charme Hotel Uhrerhof, enjoys a peculiar and favourable microclimate.
The rose garden was created in 2009 when Lotte Zemmer met with a representative of a German rose company who had happened to stay at the hotel for a few days. The roses he offered to supply came from the Kordes German breeder and had already proved extremely suitable for high altitudes and harsh climate.
The planning work was particularly demanding as paths and stairways had to be built on the side of the mountain. The rose garden, divided into various terraces, is now connected to the hotel via a wooden bridge. It was opened in 1912 and visitors should enjoy it at its very blooming best between July and September.
