This special path, promoted by Umbria P.D.O. Oil Road Association, develops on five itineraries -one for each of the five hilly sub-areas of the region, which share the centuries-old tradition of olive trees and oil. The path is aimed at discovering local history, culture, traditions, aromas and flavours. Each village along the path features wineries, farms and mills where visitors should stop for food and wine tasting experiences, attend various events and even stay for the night.

Itinerary 1 – Amerini and Valnerina hills
Located in the southern part of the region, in the Tiber Valley, this itinerary offers several sights of the enchanting landscape with mountains, woods, valleys and hills covered by with olive trees, as well as small towns and villages perched on the slopes and featuring the remains of ancient castles and medieval settlements – Amelia, Narni and Attigliano for instance. This itinerary is mostly appreciated for its wineries specialized on red wines.

Itinerary 2- Assisi and Spoleto hills
This is the largest of the five areas covered by the suggested itineraries; it’s in the eastern part of the Umbria Region, from Terni to Gubbio, featuring hills covered with ancient olive trees and thickly wooded areas. The itinerary runs across the magnificent hills of Assisi and Spoleto, passing through Spello Foligno, Campello sul Clitunno, Ferentillo, Monteleone di Spoleto, Cascia, Norcia, and Trevi.

Itinerary 3 – Martani hills
Located in the centre of the Region and bordered by the Umbrian Valley to the east and the Tiber River Valley to the west, it is plunged into the cultivation of olive trees perched on the hills; it also features several medieval villages, including Acquasparta, Massa Martana, Todi, Giano dell’Umbria, Castel Ritaldi, Collazzone, Montefalco, Gualdo Cattaneo, Bevagna, Deruta, Torgiano, and Bastia.

Itinerary 4 – Orvieto hills
This itinerary runs across the south-western part of the Region, in the countryside from Marsciano and Orvieto, Monteggabone, Baschi, and Montecchio, all the way up to Città della Pieve – on the northern border with Tuscany. The itinerary features many olive groves and vineyards.

Itinerary 5 – Trasimeno hills
This itinerary runs across the northern part of the Region, in the territory between Perugia and the neighbouring municipalities, up to Città di Castello: right there, the hilly landscape gradually descends to the shores of Lake Trasimeno. The local villages worth a visit are Passignano sul Trasimeno, Castiglione del Lago, and Tuoro sul Trasimeno.
