Villa Cerna

This is actually a farm with several vineyards and a great vocation for high-quality wine. It’s also the lifelong dream cherished by Cesare Cecchi, the grandfather of the current owners, who inherited a profitable wine business in Poggibonsi from his father Luigi in 1925. It was actually Cesare’s son Luigi – named after his grandfather – to bring the whole project to its completion in 1962. Back then he acquired the property of Villa Cerna, a 300-acre farming facility, with more than a half of the whole estate perfectly exposed and fitted for painstakingly selected vineyards. After all, Villa Cerna sits in the Castellina, in the very Chianti area. Its strategic position has always made it a true landmark in the geography and history of the Chianti area.
Villa Cerna is mentioned for the first time in 1001 when the Abbey of San Salvatore was erected by the noblewoman Ava Lambardi of Staggia in the small town of Abbadia Isola.
The original fortified building was then transformed during the Renaissance period into an elegant residence.
Villa Cerna is now one of the most evocative farms in the Chianti Classico area; its vineyards thrive on the slopes of the hill where the historic building was built.

The winemaking company is, therefore, located in one of the most suitable areas of the Chianti Classico. The wide valley that climbs towards Castellina in Chianti offers an uncommon sweetness of the landscape in the harsh geology of Chianti. This allows a perfect exposure to sunlight which guarantees the perfect ripening of the grapes.
The perfect exposure of the hilly vineyards, at an average altitude of 951 ft above sea level, makes the production cycle of the vine truly ideal, also favoured by a dry and moderately windy microclimate and by the soils of Pliocene origin (featuring clay, limestone, yellow sands and sea fossils).

The company is currently run by Luigi Cecchi’s sons, Cesare and Andrea, who have successfully blended centuries-old traditions with state-of-the-art technologies in wine production; the vineyards have been also renovated by planting the best selections of Sangiovese grapes.
