Villa Medicea in Poggio a Caiano

This villa was built by Lorenzo the Magnificent around 1485, within a large agricultural property. It is open on all sides towards the garden and the surrounding landscape. One of the most important features is the hall, known as that of Pope Leo X, decorated with allegorical frescoes celebrating the Medici family.
Since June 2007, the Museum of Still Life has been housed in the villa, exhibiting about 200 paintings from the Medici collections.
THE PARK
The gardens surrounding the villa date back mainly to the XIX century. Until the XVII century, the garden had a simple structure, with unpaved and orderly wooded areas, an Italian-style area on the right, completely devoid of fountains and sculptural decorations.
In the XVIII century, some parts of the garden were rearranged, expanding the wood called “Fagianaia”, as it had been used for hunting in the past.
In the centre of the Italian garden, a fountain replaced the grove of trees.
Over the centuries, the park acquired an irregular shape and was further enriched with an English garden, a pond, and a temple dedicated to Diana.
The part reserved to the English garden now features shaded paths and some evocative corners, while another part, sensibly smaller, has kept the original appearance of the Italian garden, featuring a central basin and several pots of lemons (Citrus x limon).
The gardens are also enriched with rare plant species and some terracotta statues.
