Excerpt from: “Garden of Veneto Villas, by Camilla Zanarotti, Silvana Editoriale.

The first Trissino settlement dates back to the eleventh century and took the form of a fortress. In the fifteenth century, the medieval building was transformed into a country residence and subsequently, between 1718 and 1722, the villa was extended into its present form, as designed by the architect Francesco Muttoni.

Muttoni was also commissioned to design the gardens, which integrate the slopes of the hills and the buildings in an extremely harmonious way. The entire complex is a remarkable example of an eighteenth-century garden, with covered and open-air walkways, elevated gardens, panoramic terraces, fish ponds and elaborate sculptures created by Orazio and Angelo Marinali.

Located further downstream, the lower villa was also designed by Muttoni. It was opened in 1746 but damaged by fire on two occasions, once in the late eighteenth century and then in 1841. Following the second fire, a decision was taken to consolidate the remains, enhancing the features of the ruin to create an extraordinarily scenic element.
