Villa Valmarana ai Nani

Excerpt from “Gardens of the Veneto Villas”, by Camilla Zanarotti, Silvana Editoriale.
The construction of the villa – built by the jurist from Vicenza, Giovanni Maria Bertolo – dates back to 1669; by 1683 it had already been praised for its beauty in a collection of poems.
In 1720, Giustino Valmarana purchased the villa and entrusted the restoration of the entire complex to the architect Francesco Muttoni. His work focused on the villa itself, the entrance gateways, the guest quarters and the monumental stables. It is likely he was also responsible for the organisation of the surrounding area.
In 1757, Gianbattista Tiepolo and his son Giandomenico were invited to decorate the interiors of both the villa and guest quarters, creating a series of magnificent fresco cycles. In the late eighteenth century, Elena Garzadori Valmarana began redesigning the gardens, creating, among other things, a small botanical garden in the parterres. She was assisted by her son Nazario, who continued the work begun by his mother. He created gardens in which, influenced by the landscape style, he built a Chinese pagoda and planted rare and exotic botanical species.
An intimate sunken formal garden, bordered by boxwood hedges, lies between the villa and the guest quarters.
