Excerpt from: “Gardens of Veneto Villas”, by Camilla Zanarotti, Silvana Editoriale.
Approximately 10 km south-east of Padua lie some of the most extraordinary gardens, the brainchild of Giuseppe Jappelli. Antonio Vigodarzere commissioned him to interpret his innovative ideas, creating a garden that became a clear demonstration of his philanthropic solidarity, offering opportunities for work to hundreds of peasants ravaged by the famine of 1816.
The architect, thanks to his hydraulic and scenographic expertise, transformed the flat countryside into an extraordinary English garden, creating a perfect illusion capable of deceiving even the most astute visitors.
The gardens see a skilful mastery of the repertoire that characterises the landscape style, highlighting above all the romantic character of nostalgia for the Middle Ages. Jappelli worked on the gardens in stages, until his death in 1852. To form the woods, which seemed natural and spontaneous, he planted more than 35.000 trees, creating the streams, waterfalls, pleasant hills and the large lake, a mirror to the majestic trees, from nothing.
