WWF Gioacchino Carone or Acquaviva delle Fonti Oasis
This post is also available in: Italiano (Italian)
Gioacchino Carone Oasis is in Acquaviva delle Fonti, in the Province of Bari, stretching along the Lama Baronale Canal.
It was created to protect the shrub area next to the canal and the adjacent abandoned agricultural area, still undergoing renaturalization and covering some 6 acres.
This very territory features thick spontaneous vegetation growing in a perfect natural habitat, now hardly ever found around the city of Bari.
The flora mainly includes Quercus coccifera, Spartium spp. and Cistus monspeliensis.
Many bird species are present in this oasis, such as Eurasian blackcaps, great tits, blue tits, finches, Sardinian warblers, robins, African stonechats, common whitethroats, and European serins. The presence of kestrels, lesser kestrels and red-footed falcons has also been recorded.
