The Promenade of the Empress

The Promenade of the Empress is one of the most beautiful waterfront walks on the Sanremo Riviera.
It owes its name to the Empress of Russia, Maria Alexandrovna, who in 1874, after visiting Sanremo, donated a considerable sum of money to its Municipality, to decorate the west side with several palm trees.

It develops along the beaches, embellishing Corso Imperatrice with its row of majestic palms; at the end, there is a small garden with two famous sculptures: the statue of “Primavera” (“Spring”) by Vincenzo Pasquali – today a true symbol of the city – and the monument of Giuseppe Garibaldi by Luigi Bistolfi. The famous Italian hero gazes at the sea on a high pedestal adorned with bronze reliefs – This monument was inaugurated on April 26, 1908.
