The swimming pool in Città Studi district and site renovations have been just completed: this is now not only a sports facility but also a gathering place for citizens.
The swimming pool was built in 1929 by the architect Luigi Secchi – the same who designed the Cozzi swimming pool – and it was dedicated to Guido Romano, a well-known Italian gymnast of that time, as per a commemorative plaque.
Some 820 feet of flower beds run along the perimeter of the pools; there are no shrubs, only a large number of perennial herbaceous plants (80 species/varieties). The fluffy and refined border was the work of Didier Berruyer from Grenoble, but Tuscan by adoption. He was among the first nursery professionals in Italy to introduce perennial herbaceous plants, use them in the gardens, and experiment with their combinations – mainly with different types of grass.
Berruyer had already opened and managed his own celebrated nursery in Pieve di Compito, Lucca, for 26 years, earning the acclaimed title of the undisputed champion of perennial plant compositions.
The garden also boasts a collection of red roses climbing around the columns of the two arcades on the long sides of the pool.
