The cultivation of apples in Valtellina dates back to ancient times, but only in the 1950s it massively flourished as can be still seen today. Such type of cultivations enriched the valley floor from Sondrio all the way up to Tirano, with eye-catching colours and sweet fragrances.
“Golden Delicious” and “Stark Delicious” are the most common varieties that boast excellent organoleptic and conservation characteristics, sensibly enhanced by the alpine environment. Other varieties include are “Gala apple”, “Morgenduft”, and “Fuji” apples.
When compared to other types of apples, the ones cultivated in Valtellina don’t show any signs of russeting, they feature a deeper colour, a more consistent and pleasant taste, as well as an intense and delicate aroma.
The three large cooperatives that bring together over 1000 farmers have created a dedicated single consortium that markets Valtellina apples under the “Melavì” brand. It’s a production of around 30 million kg per year, also exported to Europe and appreciated by over a million consumers.
