Rose Garden

The Rose Garden in Florence is located south of Piazzale Michelangelo. In 1865, the Municipality of Florence asked the architect Giuseppe Poggi – the author of the restructuring plan of the future capital of the Kingdom of Italy – to carry out the works on the left bank of the Arno River. Poggi ensured that the Municipality became the owner of about 2.4 acres of land among the current Viale Poggi, Via di San Salvatore, and Via dei Bastioni, from which a remarkable view of Florence was enjoyed. The Rose Garden was established on this terraced land towards the end of the XIX century following the typical French style. Today, the garden houses some 1.000 botanical varieties.

The irrigation system, coeval with the arrangement of the garden, features a tank placed high up in the woods behind the loggia of Piazzale Michelangelo, with a pipeline that carries water to several inlets. In 1998, the Garden was enriched with a Japanese garden created by the architect Yasuo Kitayama, called “Shorai”, and donated to Florence by the city of Kyoto (namely, from the Zen Kodai-Ji temple), twinned with Florence.
