The Folonari family has been working in the wine sector since the end of the XVIII century. In 1825, the family business became “Fratelli Folonari”, a wholly-owned company with the specific mission of developing, producing and distributing the best Italian wines all over the world.

In 1912, Italo Folonari, the grandfather of Ambrogio Folonari, with his brother Francesco bought the Ruffino company and over the years they contributed significantly to writing the history not only of Tuscan excellences but also of Italian wine in general.

In 2000, Ambrogio and his son Giovanni decided to dissolve “Tenimenti Ruffino” to focus on high-end wines, thus creating a collection of ideal farms to produce great wines, especially in Tuscany: that’s how “Tenute Ambrogio and Giovanni Folonari” was born.

The company is made up of several estates: Nozzole and Cabreo (in Greve, Chianti – province of Florence), TorCalvano in Montepulciano, La Fuga in Montalcino (province of Siena), Campo al Mare estate in Bolgheri, and Vigne in Porrona (Maremma), in the Montecucco D.O.C.

Nozzole Estate dates back to 1300 and was purchased in 1971. It features 951 acres (222 of selected vineyard) – it is a historic farm in the Chianti Classico area, located on Passo dei Pecorai.

Tenute del Cabreo, also located in the Chianti area, is divided into two wine-growing facilities: the first in Cabreo di Zano (114 acres) dominates the town of Greve in Chianti, the other is located in the hamlet of Panzano, at 1.640 ft above sea level and features 62 acres of vineyards.

In the municipality of Castagneto Carducci, in the province of Livorno and near the Tyrrhenian sea, the Folonari family began buying several properties in 1999. They were chosen according to their ideal climate for the cultivation of vines and the warm wind from the sea. All the clayey and sandy soils slightly slope towards the sea and have already been able to boost the quality of Bordeaux wine varieties.

In the province of Siena, Tenuta la Fuga was actually established in the southwestern part of the Montalcino area, at an altitude of 1.312 ft above sea level. Right there, temperatures are higher and there’s a light but quite beneficial air coming from the sea. Tor Calvano, on the other hand, covers some 74 acres (22 are used for vineyards) and features a large villa with two towers: in the basement, there’s the typical vaulted cellar with oak barrels.

Last but not least, Tenuta Vigne in Parrona can be found in the municipality of Cinigiano, in the province of Grosseto, not far from Montalcino; the estate develops around an ancient castle on some 150 acres. Sea breezes and a remarkable temperature range are the key ingredients to the typical aromatic notes of the wines produced here.
