Seghetti Panichi Park

The Seghetti Panichi Historical Park is part of a larger complex, called Borgo Panichi, consisting of an XVIII century villa, an old country house from the early XIX century, an independent house, and a XVII century oratory with frescoes dedicated to San Pancrazio.

The park, designed by the great landscape botanist Ludwig Winter, was built and annexed between 1875 and 1890. At that time, the landscape architect had just finished building the famous “Mortola” Garden in Ventimiglia and also another similar facility in the Tronto River Valley – thanks to the ideal microclimate, he could also plant many of his beloved palm trees.
Thus, after having designed the area with gentle hills and slopes crossed by bending paths, he planted many palm trees, including two rare specimens of Jubaea spectabili , several Phoenix canariensis, and Phoenix dactilifera, Erythea armata, Washingtonia filifera, Chamaerops humilis, as well as groves of Yucca gloriosa, and Cordyline australis.
He also added a group of Quercus ilex, which has now become monumental, and, to the north-east, native species of red beeches (Fagus sylvatica “Atropurpurea”), other holm oaks (Quercus ilex), and several other varieties of oak, horse chestnuts (Aesculus hippocastanum), magnolias (Magnolia grandiflora); he planted some oriental species as well, such as Ginkgo biloba, East Asian cherry trees (Prunus serrulata), Taxodium disticum, and Sophora japonica “Pendula”.

Today, the Seghetti Panichi Historical Park is part of the circuit of the Great Italian Gardens.
