Villa Sgariglia

Villa Sgariglia is located in the hamlet of Piagge, in Ascoli Piceno. Built in 1770 by the architect Giosafatti, on an ancient XIII century convent, for the Sgariglia family, it remained in their possession until 1908, when it was left to the town of Ascoli Piceno. It should have been used as a retirement facility for the poor and the needy, but it never was as in 2008 the whole estate became a luxury hotel.
The villa has a rectangular shape and is spread over three floors covered by the roof and a Roman-style bell tower.
On the ground floor, there is direct access to the garden which is arranged on several terraces, with an irregular layout typical of the local XVIII century style.
THE GARDEN
The garden, facing south-east, is protected and hidden by walls that create an even more favourable microclimate for the cultivation of plants such as citron (Citrus medica), lemons (Citrus limon), mandarins (Citrus reticulata), and bitter oranges (Citrus x aurantium). Among the ornamental species, there is boxwood (Buxus sempervirens) and many roses. The beautiful gravel paths and the nymphaeum are also worth mentioning.
