Muntisel or Mont Isel Public Park

Muntisel public park is located in Varallo, in the province of Vercelli.

Over the centuries, it was owned by the adjacent Franciscan monastery, which used it as a vegetable garden and orchard. It eventually became the property of the municipality in 1814 and was opened to the public in 1873.

The current appearance and layout are the result of the changes implemented in 1935, when several paths and rest areas were created under some small trees and shrubs, as well as near the large foliage of larger tree specimens.

Even the decorative elements and furnishings in the park, are true memories of that ancient past: fences, rocailles, and several structures in fake wood.

Inside the park, there’s Sacro Monte di Varallo, a destination for religious pilgrimages.

The park also retains an important educational function: in fact, it has documented the local flora and local minerals since ancient times, like a small open-air museum.
