Garzaia di Carisio Special Nature Reserve
This post is also available in: Italiano (Italian)
This reserve is in the province of Novara and in the province of Vercelli; it is a protected natural area of Piedmont, established in 1978. It covers an area of 227 acres and it is crossed by the Elvo Stream. The reserve consists mostly of corn cultivations, rice paddies and poplar groves.
The heronry, probably already present in the 1940s, has a forest exclusively made of black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia) in the centre. Nonetheless, until 1976 it was made of large oaks, featuring some 1500 pairs of ardehydes.
Between 1976 and 1978, great deforestation considerably reduced its size, as well as the heron population. Since the establishment of the Reserve, the heronry has started to develop again and the nesting pairs of night herons, egrets and grey herons are considerably increasing.
Access to the public is not allowed, except for study and research purposes.
