Occhito Dam – Alcedo Visitor Centre
This post is also available in: Italiano (Italian)
Occhito dam was created following the dyking of Fortore river which originates on the Sannita Apennines and flows into the Adriatic Sea, west of Lesina, after some 62 miles.
The dam was built in the late 1950s near Carlantino, one of the small towns in the province of Foggia on the border with Molise; this great feat of engineering has perfectly supported the water supply of the city of Foggia ever since.
Drinking and irrigation water is also obtained from the lake and the dam: a popular tourist attraction as well.
The lake has been acknowledged as a site of community interest (SCI), and features a remarkable avifaunal value, serving also as a vital wetland resource for otters.
The whole area has been identified as a protection oasis, that is, an area reserved for feeding, sheltering and supporting wild animals.
The Visitor Centre includes an Information point, a picnic area, an instructional nature trail, and a children’s play area.
