The ancient city of Nora is located on the promontory of Capo Pula, on the southern coast of Sardinia, west of Cagliari. It was one of the first Phoenician settlements in Sardinia, established around the XIII century B.C. and soon became a famous religious and commercial hub.

Few traces of the original city are still visible: parts of the Phoenician-Punic settlement have been partially covered or erased by following Roman architecture and re-arrangement.
The structures still visible today are, in fact, mostly Roman – the island was conquered in 238 B.C., thus Nora underwent a gradual transformation, becoming the seat of the Roman governor and the municipium.

The visible remains of some Roman buildings include the forum, the theatre, an amphitheatre (not yet completed), spas, and residential areas; several archaeological finds clearly show how commerce and prosperity were guaranteed to the city also during the Roman domination.

The decline of the ancient settlement began in the V century A.D., following the occupation of the island by the Vandals (456-466 A.D.); Nora was eventually abandoned by the Romans around the XVIII century A.D.
