With the mountains and perennial glaciers over the horizon, Valle d’Aosta also features other types of landscape with thriving vines.

Viticulture in this Region has very ancient origins. The surviving frescoes (depicting the cultivation of vines and the production of wine) in many local castles and churches are a testament to the great importance of such activity also in the past economy.
The local wine was even exported to the Valais Canton and the Tarentaise Valley in the heart of the French Alps – there used to be a dedicated “wine route” that stretched all the way to the Rhone valley, originating on the hills of Chambave.

Modern viticulture started being developed in the 1950s, leading to a downsizing of the cultivation: from about 2.965 acres to 1.235, thus creating serious problems for the conservation of the landscape and the survival of native vines.
In the Lower Valley, visitors may discover another wealth of Arnad, lard.
