Anse Vallive of Ostellato are the only remaining part of the ancient valleys surrounding the town, which have been named “Oasi di Protezione della Fauna” by the provinve of Ferrara and were extended for about 10 km; they are four swampy bights in wet and fresh water areas, which host numerous vegetal and animal species.
As a matter of fact, there are more than 150 species of water birds, which nidify and migrate, such as herons (great white, grey and red ones), predatory and wading birds.
The typical vegetation of these valleys is the one of wet and fresh water areas, there are white and yellow waterlilies (Nymphaea alba and Nuphar lutea), Butomus umbellatus. On the banks there are white willows (Salix alba), water chestnuts (Trapa natans) and elders (Sambucus nigra).
It is possible to conduct activities like birdwatching, walks on foot, by bycicle and on horseback, sport fishing, canoeing inside the oasis. In addition, an astronomical observatory is located at the entrance.
Ostellato’s Museo del Territorio is one of the attractions of the town and it shows the evolution of the territory and of the people belonging to the Po valley and its delta. The event “Zucca in festa” offers typical products, whose principal ingredient is pumpkin.
