The possessions of the Illuminati family are located between Centroguerra and Neretto, North of the province of Teramo, between the Apennines and the Adriatic Sea, 300 m above sea-level. At the end of the 19th century, Nicola Illuminati established the Fattoria Nicò winery, now run by his nephew Dino, together with his wife and sons.

The area dedicated to the cultivation of wines extends for more than 130 hectares, all belonging to the areas of Controguerra DOC and DOCG Montepulciano d’Abruzzo Colline Teramane, with 1100 wines per hectare. In Roman times, these lands were known for the production of wine and also for their climate; Hannibal witnessed it with his troops while they stopped here after the Trasimeno battle.

In these grounds, the rows of wines extend as far as the eye can see along the hills and their sunny land overlooks the blue Adriatic Sea and the massive Gran Sasso.

The climate of this area is particularly mild and ventilated; this guarantees little humidity and therefore allows to avoid the majority of fungal diseases and to have a quick and optimum growth of grapes, a necessary condition for the concentration of sugars that gives the grapes a special aroma.
