Blufi Tulip Field

A few steps from the Sanctuary of Madonna dell’Olio di Blufi and the Petralie, along the Palermo-Catania motorway (near Irosa Exit), a huge field of tulips turns the whole landscape bright red every month of March. Such an impressive expanse is actually in the very heart of the Madonie area and it’s full of Tulipa raddii, syn. Tulipa praecox, a species of unknown origin, extremely hard to find in Sicily, although similar flowers can be found also on the Sicani and the Palermo Mountain Range.

It is a species of Middle Eastern origin, which has naturalized in several Italian Regions, probably coming from gardens. Its flowers are fiery red, with pointed tepals, a black spot at the base and, in the internal ones, a yellow apex.
