Castle Lancellotti is located in Lauro (AV), on a rock facing the South, where probably there was a construction of Ancient Rome. The first document making reference to the manor dates back to 976, but the first certain testimony is of 1277, when the custody of the castle of Lauro was given to Margherita de Toucy, cousin of Carlo I d’Angiò, “pro habiliora mora”.
The masters of the castle have been of various families: the princes of Principato di Salerno during the Longobard period; Sanseverino Conti di Caserta in the Norman period; del Balzo Conti di Avellino during the Swabian-Angevin period; Orsini Conti di Nola in the Aragonese period; lastly Pignatelli and Lancellotti during the 18th century.
French republicans burnt the castle in 1799, during the Lancellotti dominion. It remained abandoned till 1870 when prince don Filippo Massimo Lancellotti had it rebuilt in eclectic style.
The small Italian garden belongs to the same period with hedges of topiary shapes, which is located inside the castle walls.
It has been opened to the public for not so many years and now it is considered a history museum. It is also available for private and cultural events.
