Beans of Controne, common in the cilentano hinterland, small, white, round and without spots. Hey have an ancient tradition and are considered refined products because of their high-digestibility and thin peel, which is practically impalpable.
Controne is a village surrounded by olive tree groves and fields, under which a layering rich in carbonate is stretched out, which created fresh and fertile soils which gave to these beans their characteristics. The legume cultivation, so appreciated by good cooking lovers, is such an important source of income for the local farmers, that the municipal administration together with “Assessorato all’Agricoltura della Regione Campania”, are working to enhance the beans, which have already received the DOC mark. The requested recognition is the IGP mark, to grant the origin and authenticity of the product, that Slow Food included in the list of the Italian specialties to safeguard.
Controne dedicates a festival to its most famous product each year, in the last weekend of November, where it is possible to buy the beans and taste local dishes.
It was created in 1983 and it involves all the inhabitants of the area, where masked characters are present together with typical taverns, which offer the possibility of tasting local dishes containg beans.
