Felsina

The origin of the name “Fèlsina” dates back to the Etruscan civilization, and from ancient Roman times, this winemaking company has always been in the municipality of Castelnuovo Berardenga, in the province of Siena, on the south-eastern edge of the Chianti Classico production area – right at the gates of the Ombrone Valley.
Pilgrims on their way to the Holy Land, along the Via Francigena, used to stop here for refreshments in the Middle Ages, while the long story of Felsina encompasses Benedictine Monks, the Counts of Berardenga and, finally, Domenico Poggiali. The latter revived the local viticulture in 1966 – a very difficult time for such an enterprise – massively investing in quality grapes and expert winemakers.
Domenico has always done his very best to cultivate his vineyards, without negatively impacting with the surrounding environment and trying to mitigate the inevitable presence of human technologies and farming techniques.
Every element of the landscape is vital for the protection of its rich biodiversity: in fact, the farm includes woods, fields sown with cereals, olive groves, large scrub areas, ditches and waterways, while the smaller fields of the nearby hunting reserve are cultivated with alfalfa, common sainfoin, sorghum, sunflowers, and field beans.
Another important issue is the great attention paid to preserving the natural fertility of the soil, which is maintained around acceptable values, avoiding any artificial boost and thus complying with biodynamic agriculture.
Due to its particular location, the range of wines produced by Felsina includes classic Chianti, Tuscan Chardonnay, and the excellent Vinsanto del Chianti classico, a worthy representative of one of the most appreciated Italian sweet wines.
