Free Spa of Vulcano

On Vulcano, one of the Aeolian Islands, off the coast of Messina, there are numerous pools of open-air sulphurous hyperthermal waters, immersed in small, steaming sulfur reliefs (“fumaroles”) near the sea.
The same spring also flows into the sea, so that sulphurous vapours, brackish water and clayey mud (with a high sulfur content) merge with saltwater, both near the shore and in the open sea.
In addition to the sulphurous baths, there are “fumaroles” and pools dug in the sand and hot mud.
This area used to be free, but today it is managed by a company that keeps it clean, in exchange for a ludicrous entrance fee and even some weekly discounts. It is open to the public from mid-April to late autumn.
Even if the smell is not the most pleasant, the sulphurous vapours are beneficial to the respiratory tract, while diving into the pools would prove useful for joints, dermatological, muscular and skeletal affections, as well as for face and body care.
