Gardens and cloisters of San Michele in Isola
This post is also available in: Italiano (Italian)
The church of San Michele in Isola also known as San Michele di Murano, given its proximity to the island of Murano; it is found on the island of San Michele, in Venice.
The cloister of this church was built between 1448 and 1466 and is decorated with capitals with plant decorations. Right here, there is one of the “gardens of silence” of Venice: the cemetery of San Michele. Inside the cemetery, along the rows of cypresses (Cupressus sempervirens) and yews (Taxus baccata), there are splendid specimens of laurels (Laurus nobilis), oaks, maples, magnolias, pines and rose gardens, as well as a monumental ancient tomb, marked by the passing of time and salt corrosion.
There are many famous people buried here. For instance, the American poet Ezra Pound, the Russian composer Igor Fyodorovich Stravinsky, the Russian theatrical impresario Sergei Pavlovich Diaghilev and, from 21 June 1997, the Russian poet Iosif Aleksandrovich Brodsky.
